Black Ops Zombies “Moon” Review

by on Aug.24, 2011, under Call of Duty, Consoles, Zombies

Well yesterday Rezurrection on XBOX 360, and I put in about 10 hours of game play. Since I don’t have an XBOX 360, my friend Pun was kind enough to come over at 5:45 am after he downloaded it…yes I’m a dork like that. We played until 9:30am and he came back over after work at around 6:30pm and we played until around 1am. I gotta say, this map is EPIC!!!

Ok so you start off at Area 51 right in front of the Pack A Punch machine. There are no rounds while at Area 51 and you just fight off a horde of zombies. You hear an alarm go off and all of a sudden, the zombies start running and dogs begin to spawn. There is a teleporter up the stairs that is protected by a big fence/gate. The fence is lifted when the alarm goes off and alll players must be on it for it to teleport you to the moon if your playing co-op. One more thing to mention is that right in front of the teleporter is the Juggernog or Speed Cola machine. If it’s Speed Cola the first time, then it’s going to be Juggernog the next time you go to Area 51 and so forth. Since the power is on while your at Area 51, if you can survive long enough to get the amount of points you need, you can buy the perk that is in front of the teleporter and make a quick get away

The teleporter that takes you back to Area 51 is pretty far from where you spawn on the moon. Unlike Area 51, the moon has no power and you have to find the power switch to be able to use the teleporter. The power switch is in the room with the black pyramid (if you’ve seen the trailers and know the black pyramid I’m talking about.) The same rules apply for the teleporter on the moon in that all players must be on it for it to activate. There’s a timer that tells you when you can use the teleporter, and once the timer finishes you just have to get on the teleporter and you go. In solo obviously you don’t have to worry about your teammates getting on the teleporter with you as there is only one player.

Once you teleport, you’ll be on the moon. The FIRST thing you need to do is right in front of you when you teleport. There is a locker type thing in the middle of the room with a space suit. You must take the space suit and press up on the d-pad to put the mask on before you suffocate. After you do that you can fight some more zombies. NOTE: The rounds begin when your on the moon.

The first thing you may notice is the lack of gravity. It’s sort of like walking under water. If you do a dolphin dive you’ll float for a little bit..it’s pretty neat. Sometimes it’s helpful and sometimes it’s dangerous because you may miss your targets while jumping.

Something I want to mention is the space suit zombie. He appears almost every round and has a gamer tag above his head. This gamer tag is going to be the name of someone on your friends list or someone you’ve played online with. The space suit zombie’s gamer tag is in red so you can tell him apart from your teammates which have white gamer tags. You can kill him, but it takes a lot of ammo. Once you pump enough rounds into this puss bucket he’ll explode. Since there’s a lack of gravity, his explosion makes you and the zombies get some air…it can be somewhat helpful.

Ok…this map is HUGE. It’s about the size of Call of the Dead + Shangri-La. Maybe even bigger. There’s a lot of doors to open and there’s a few different paths you can take. There’s a lot of rooms that have a lot of space to run around. This makes for easy zombie trains.

There are areas with gravity and areas without it. It’s tough to run a zombie train when there’s little gravity, but it can be done. Get your points up then move on. My favorite place to camp is the dome. This area is HUGE. It also has PhD Flopper which you may find very useful on this map. When you run into the dome, there are these green springy things that shoot you into the air onto other platforms with more of the springy things. You can control yourself in the air a little bit which you’ll need to do in order to land on the pads. If you fall to the ground you’ll die unless you have Flopper. You can survive the fall by landing on a pillow type thing that you eventually gravitate towards on your journey through the air.

During the game, you’ll have certain objectives. There are 4 giant saws called Excavators that cut into the dome and into the ground that can either block your path or take the gravity out of the rooms. This can be a problem, so you have to find a hacking device and take it back to the spawn room and hack a main frame to deactivate the giant saws. The problem is that the hacking device replaces your helmet (which is kinda lame if you ask me) which means you have to run through certain areas without air. You have to move quick.

We discovered that when you grab the hacking device you can run to the teleporter that takes you to Area 51. You’ll have to be fast though because in order to get to the teleporter, you must run through an area with no air. Of course, your teammates (or teammate) have to be on the teleporter in order for it to activate. You’ll teleport to Area 51 and fight off the horde until the alarm goes off then hop back onto the teleporter which will spawn you in the room you have to be in to deactivate the Excavators. Once you deactivate the Excavators you must trade your hacking device for the space suit once again or you’ll suffocate and die…losing your perks if in co-op and ending your game in solo.

NOW, let’s get to the fun stuff. Weapons and perks. All the Black Ops weapons make a return (like the Commando, Ray Gun, Law, Dragonov, M-16, Galil, etc.) with a few new things to add. Also returning to the game is the Gersch Device which was only seen on Ascension and quickly became a fan favorite. The Gersch Device replaces the Monkey Bombs as a sort of “time out” weapon which (if you don’t already know) gives you a few seconds to get your thoughts together by sucking the zombies into a sort of black hole. The wall guns are all there, scattered throughout the epic size of the map. The Mystery Box carries all the same weapons as usual but with the new Wave Gun and the QED device. It turns out that the PPSH does NOT appear on this map as previous rumors have stated. In fact, there are NO World at War weapons on Moon, only Black Ops weapons.

The Wave Gun is a microwave sort of gun that cooks the zombies from the inside out, causing them to explode into nothing. The QED device is basically like the Matroyska Dolls from Ascension and Call of the Dead, OR it spawns a gun (like the Ray Gun) in the air that shoots in a 360 rotation for a second. It’s kind of unclear at this time what the QED actually does but that is what I saw it do when I used it.

There is a new perk called Gun Mule which allows the player to carry 3 guns at once instead of only 2. If you get downed you lose the gun you had out when you got downed. So if you know your getting downed, try to switch to your least favorite as fast as you can.

Also returning to Moon is the Nova Crawlers from Kino Der Toten and Five. They aren’t called Nova Crawlers anymore. They’re called Phasing Zombies. The reason for this is that they teleport short distances while on the move. They still explode into a cloud of gas which still hurts the zombies that run into the cloud.

There’s a lot of things still unanswered as of yet since the map is still new. But people have already cracked the main Easter Egg’s and if you look on youtube you can watch as people complete it. Sam can actually be seen on this map and if you complete the main Easter Egg, you can actually play as her as she takes over Richtofen’s body. It’s a very long, in depth Easter Egg. I’m not sure if it can be done in solo, but if you complete it you get all 8 perks permanently for all players. It’s been rumored that in order to achieve Moon’s main Easter Egg, you must have already completed the main Easter Egg’s in Call of the Dead and Shangri-La because you need the Golden Rod from Call of the Dead and the Focusing Stone from Shangri-La. Ascension appears to be the only DLC that doesn’t have a required Easter Egg that must be done for Moon’s Easter Egg.

Unlike the other maps, Moon has 2 Easter Egg songs. One is called “Coming Home” sung by Elena Siegman and written by Kevin Sherwood. The other song is from Avenged Sevenfold called “Nightmare.”

We’re still in the beginning stages of this map so stay tuned for more info as it all unfolds. Feel free to leave comments on discoveries and findings that weren’t mentioned here.
