Nescaline for the iPhone! Play NES Games Updated: Pulled!!
by Snake Pliskin on Dec.22, 2009, under Game Review, Retro, iPhone
UPDATE: Apple has pulled Nescaline from the App store already! The letter sent to the developer stated it was pulled due to the App being an emulator. Let us know if you were able to get it and what games you’ve been playing in the Comments!
Original Post:
I just wanted to post some quick thoughts on this… I am playing Castlevania now and it does seem to be a little glitchy but runs pretty good. Kind of reminds me of playing with early versions of Nesticle. The game runs pretty smooth, sound is glitchy on occasion. I think the control pad size should be adjustable in Full Screen Mode (Which you get to by turning your phone sideways) is a little to big for me. Transferring ROMS is a little tedious since you need to fire up a web server on your laptop or actually find a web site with direct download links to ROMS. You can add a ROM by typing or pasting the URL into Nescaline.
Next up is Contra… Yeah Baby!
Overall, I think this App/Emulator is off to a great start and with a few updates I think this could be awesome! Hopefully Nintendo doesn’t make a stink and Apple keeps on providing developers with some much needed freedom!
Check it out here.
Why I hate The Sword of Fargoal
by Snake Pliskin on Dec.13, 2009, under Game Review, iPhone
This is by no means our full review of Fargoal for the iPhone but I needed to tell you why I hate this game… It’s so good I can’t stop playing it! It is now eating into what little time I have as it is to sleep!

This game is fantastic. Great tile set, tons to explorer, and the game is different everytime you start over. It highlights some of the great aspects of rogue like games and removes some of the complexities. You can collect gold, magic spells, level up your character, and explorer the dungeons but you don’t have to worry about eating corpses, dipping stuff in fountains, etc… Don’t get me wrong, I love nethack. I have wasted tons of time playing nethack on nethack.alt.org and it’s fun. I think Fargoal will create a fun rogue like experience for casual users and maybe some will move on to more complex rogue-likes, such as nethack.

Fargoal is a couple dollars really well spent. You will have a great time with this. Random dungeon generation also gives this game a superior level of replayability as well.
Go ahead and pick it up then kiss a decent chunk of your free time good bye!

Call of Duty Zombies – Review
by Snake Pliskin on Dec.07, 2009, under Game Review, iPhone
Hell Yeah!
Call of Duty? Check!
Nazi Zombies? Check!
Online Multiplayer (WiFi)? Check!

This game has it all! Excellent graphics, excellent controls, multiplayer, and most importantly its a shit load of fun!
I didn’t even realize this was headed our way on the iPhone and I was quite surprised when I found it while trolling the App Store. I immediately picked this one up and gave it a go…

Game Play
Call of Duty Zombies offers two modes of play. You can play the single player campaign or you can join up with four team members (two if you are using Bluetooth). One down side here is currently you only have one map to play on. According to the developers new maps should be on the way soon. We are not sure if it will be free or purchased DLC but either way I am looking forward to some additional maps.
The single map available does provide for some interesting strategizing on your part though. As you kill the zombies you will earn points that you can use to either purchase new weapons or open various pathways throughout the map. You can use this to your advantage to control the paths available to the zombies as they begin to over take you in later rounds. Each entrance the zombies can utilize are boarded up with the exception of a tunnel that will open up once you unlock the door to the second room on the bottom floor. The zombies must breakdown the barrier before the can enter the building.
Head shot coming right up!!
The game play is divided into rounds. Each round will increase the amount of zombies that want to eat your brain. You will have a little breather between each round to restock ammo, repair barriers, or try your luck at the random weapon box. The weapon box also adds some excitement to the game. For a cheap price you can grab some pretty decent firepower or you may get lucky and score some hardcore firepower. I highly recommend opening the clock on the second floor and picking up the flame thrower. Roast Zombie meat for all!!

COD Zombies also offers an achievement system which provides some interesting goals to achieve like blowing your self up with a grenade and taking three zombies with you!
Ahhhhhh!
Controls
The controls all seem to work well although, I have spent the most time playing with the Dual Stick configuration. I found the controls smooth and responsive in the Dual Stick configuration. I have had an issue a few times getting the flame thrower to fire though.
Braaaaaiiiiinns
Graphics & Sound
The graphics are nicely polished and smooth. On my iPhone 3GS the frame rate has been consistent regardless of how many of the undead are running after me. Atmosphere is perfect for scaring the hell out of you especially when things are getting crazy. Creepy noises, moaning, and screaming zombies all add to the atmosphere of the game. Which sounds awesome when you have your earbuds strapped to your ears. The heavy music just adds to the excitement.
Closing
We have seen a few issues where shooting the zombie does not inflict any damage and repairing barriers does not give you any points but don’t let that stop you from making this most excellent purchase. Hopefully those issues will be fixed in the next version. Also, I think this game would benefit if they enabled Voice Chat. Working out strategies with your team members would make this game even better.
Also don’t forget to setup an account on codwaw.com and link it to your iPhone COD user to track all your zombie killing stats!

Please stop by our forums to discuss strategy or setup private games.

AT&T can kiss my A$&$!
by Snake Pliskin on Jun.09, 2009, under iPhone
If you saw the new iPhone announcement today during WWDC you probably thought “Gee, I can’t wait to get one”. Well, don’t get to excited just yet. I used the pre-order tool from Apple to determine how it would cost me to upgrade. Here is how much a new iPhone 3G$ will cost me…
- $499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
- $599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
- $699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
This phone is going to have the slowest conversion rate ever! I don’t care how great they are I am not paying $599 for one.
I am sure people signing up for a new AT&T plan will be able to get these at the price point mentioned during WWDC; $199 for 16GB. Even if I pay full price I am not going to get MMS Messaging or tethering. We still have to wait for those and when AT&T is ready to allow tethering I am sure we will all have to pay more money for that functionality.
Last year was a better deal. If you had the original iPhone you could upgrade. Apple and AT&T would sell more iPhone 3G$ with the same deal. I would be fine extending my AT&T contract for another two years this way. I understand that people who purchased the original iPhone paid a premium to get their hands on new technology, I was one of them. Then a year later I upgraded. The new iPhone is nice and does have some updated features but I no longer feel that this is new tech that should have a new tech premium attached to it. Early adopters always pay a premium…
My 2 cents…
iPhone OS 3.0 is coming -Updated-
by Snake Pliskin on Apr.09, 2009, under iPhone
According to engadget, Apple will be previewing iPhone OS 3.0 and also demonstrating the new SDK as well.
We will keep you updated on March 17th as the event unfolds…
source: engadget
Update
During the event held on March 17th, Apple announced several changes headed our way in the latest iteration of the iPhone Operating System.
Some of the big ones…
MMS Text Messaging (Finaly!!!)
Cut/Copy/Paste (Break out the booze!)
Youtube login, subscriptions, and support for viewing comments
Voice Recorder
Mail.app will support rotating the iPhone horizontally, providing a better reading view and full size keyboard support when typing emails.
Developers can now access the Dock port via the iPhone SDK
Stereo Bluetooth support (A2DP)
iPhone tethering for internet access via Bluetooth or USB.
I am particular excited about Apple providing Developer support for controlling the Dock connector. This will pave the way for things like the iControlPad and lots of other interesting peripherals. Some games just play better with a real joystick
iMob Review

iMob Review
Summary
Become the ultimate mobster. Grow your mob by adding members and increase your power and income by purchasing properties and taking out your rivals.

Graphics
The game is mostly presented using text and background images. The text is presented in an easy to read format and color scheme that looks attractive and is easy on the eyes.
Game Play
This is where iMob shines. Its is loads of fun and quite addicting. Complete as many missions as possible to try and raise your level and player stats. Each time you gain enough experience to level up, you can apply 3 skill points to increase your players abilities. Increasing Attack and Defense points will make you a stronger fighter. Increasing your stamina allows you to increase your attack frequency. Increasing your health with give you more hit points so that you can withstand more damage when other players attack you. Increasing your energy, you can complete more missions to earn experience points faster.
You can also equip your mob with various weapons, armor, and vehicles to increase your attack strength. Make sure you have enough equipment to cover the amount of members in your mob. All of your stats including health, stamina, and energy recharge at certain time intervals. The recharge times are set just right to permit pick up and play during short burst of free time.
Each time a player successfully attacks your mobster you will lose money that you have not deposited into your bank account. Each time your mobster is killed you will lose some experience points.
The other objective is to grow your mob by adding members. The more members you add the more powerful your mob becomes and a percentage of your mob will assist you when battling other players. You can add mob members by inviting other players that are near your current location via GPS tracking or adding Friend Codes from other web sites or Friend Codes that players post to you via the built-in messaging system.
Respect
You can purchase respect points via the App store to give you some game play advantages. Currently, you can use respect points to instantly refill your energy, add a henchman to increase your mob member count, or trade in some respect points for cash.
Properties
You can increase your hourly income by purchasing different types of Land and then building stores, clubs, restaurants, or casinos. Each property you have will increase your hourly income. Keep in mind that property costs will increase as you increase your player level.
Hits
Someone getting on your nerves and kicking your ass? You can mark them for death! When a
player is marked for death it will get posted to the “Marked” section of the game. You will have to pay a hefty sum as a bounty to the person who takes out the mobster you marked.
Closing
iMob is an enjoyable game and once iPhone 3.0 software gets released, I hope the developers will add support for copy and paste to it. It will be much easier when we can copy codes posted via the messaging system and paste them into the invite via Friend Code box. See you in the game!
